Annoyed by new hotel

2008-08-11
I was reading the topic on michigans and got to thinking about my childhood. Since Ronnie's and Harrigan's were the best places to go when I was younger. This got me to thinking about Putters mini putt in Plattsburgh, that I also frequented. I know it was torn down a couple months ago now, but I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks about this. If you haven't heard, I believe a Hampton is going up in it's place. I realize there are like three weeks in the year when our local hotels are completely booked, but is it really necessary to have torn down a family friendly place and put up yet another hotel? We're running out of great "family friendly" places as it is...

I agree with you oceanmomer.  I was flabbergasted when I saw the demolition of the mini-putt on route 3!  (the one behind Comfort Inn has reopened, however limited in hours).

This topic has been previously discussed in great detail somewhere else in the pipeline community - I just looked around a bit for it, but couldn't find it.  Maybe Scott could help us out here.

We do have a lot of hotels in and around this town.  I guess Plattsburgh is just a stopping point for a lot of travelers who are on their way to other destinations in the region, such as Lake Placid, Saratoga, Burlington, where there is more to do than just stay in a hotel.

The Akeys own the property and can do whatever they want with it.

Can't blame the Akeys alone - they can only do what the town LETS them do.  Of course there is more revenue from hotels than from mini-putts.

This is true about revenue.. My family sure had fun at the mini-putt and go karts though. Any one know anything about the other one behind bootleggers?

The other section/forum post I believe you are talking about is Junk - in - the - Trunk

Yes, Scott - thanks!

Oceanmomer, this topic has been under discussion before, as noted in Scott's comment above.  Check it out if you're interested.

It does seem to be a good topic, doesn't it?  I thought I was the only one who noticed the lack of leisure activities around here for those who may be less active.

Ten you are definetly not the only one.  I recently moved back from Annapolis MD and it has been quite an adjustment.  Living in Naptown I was an hour from DC, half hour from Baltimore, all the while, living in a city that truly made use of its waterfront (great downtown overlooking the Chesapeake).  People would walk downtown just to see the different specialty shops around.  The city needs to figure out how to invest in downtown, maybe once they get all the extra tax money from Lake Forest they can give tax breaks to businesses looking to open downtown (pref. non bars).

Sorry about the double post...

but I realised I went off tangent a little bit... so to bring it all together.  With the tax breaks to businesses opening up downtown, maybe they could also give breaks to businesses that offer family friendly activities.
