Boycott the Ferry

2008-04-22

What a beautiful weekend! I had decided to go to Burlington for the day. I drive up to the ferry pay booth and for my tiny car with two people it cost me $24.50 round trip. That's a whole tank of gas... I was quite irritated but didn't let the fact that this was a total rip-off ruin the beautiful day.

I have decided to never take the ferry again until a bridge is built. That's a sure pipe-dream! Just think of all the possibilities a bridge crossing could have. They are endless..

The drive is not much longer up to the Champlain bridge and I will save some money, but not time. The ride is nice anyway.

What would be neat is: If we had a walk on, high speed transportation boat between Plattsburgh and Burlington. Plattsburgh could use business and I think it's a great idea. What do you think?

i heard something about the ferry company trying to get even more money for trips because their contract renewal is coming up ? do you know anything about that ?

Matt,

I didn't hear that, but it is some interesting information. I will surely be looking into this. If you hear anything else keep me informed!

Are they going to start charging for pets too? What a rip-off.

Good long wait for a bridge.  I heard serious talk of it again about 10 years ago - talk was that it would take a tremendous amount of money and a minimum of five years to build.  Would be nice, even with a toll charge (which there will be, after all, from the cost to build), to have the convenience of a bridge right here, especially in additon to the HORRIBLE new road they just cut down through the heart of deer country and farmland on Cumberland Head.

In the meantime, enjoy the beautiful scenery to Rouses Point and back south in Vermont - you'll spend your $24.40 in gas anyway for that drive.  I understand the boycott, but because the prices are so high, who suffers?

The prices are high, everywhere, for everything.  What will happen? Very scary

We will be waiting forever for a bridge! I won't hold my breath.

The road cutting through the farmland on Cumberland Head was not the best idea. It saves a whole of 2 minutes off our ride to the ferry? You will most likely be waiting when you get there anyway. The road was most likely build with other interests at mind, probably the development of the land out there. Who owns most of that land?

The excuse used by councilors for buiding a new road to the ferry was that the old one was unsafe, with so many curves and so many fatal accidents.  While that was absolutely true, the bigger picture was to increase revenue, by making interstate travel more "convenient".  While I'm all for increasing revenue to the area, at what expense?

A lot of the land that the road now cuts through was former farmland.  Some of the owners were "forced" to sell, which split their acreage to the extent that there is no longer road access to the part of the property that was cut through.  What does this do to the value?  The developers are at a bit of a standstill right now, because the water plant serving Cumberland Head can't handle more homes.

It would be great to see a bridge!  If we're waiting for that to happen in our lifetime, you're right not to hold your breath.  I heard that the govt. had been trying to get that road built for 20 years, but residents fought it long and hard, finally losing the battle, I guess.

The Gov't never loses. lol

Maybe the road was built in hopes for a bridge? Wishful thinking.
