PLATTSBURGH GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO HOLD DOWNTOWN REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET EVENT
Community groups work together to provide an alternative to holiday shopping

Plattsburgh, NY - On December 17th starting at 11:00 am, the Plattsburgh General Assembly and the ROTA Gallery will be presenting the second local Really Really Free Market event this year, to be held at the ROTA Gallery, located at 19 Clinton Street. The event aims to be a community minded approach to an alternative take on the holiday shopping season, as well as a way for area people to connect with each other and share some of the resources existing in our community.

The Really Really Free Market (RRFM) is an idea that began to take off around 2004 and has become increasingly frequent around the country and beyond ever since. A Really Really Free Market encourages community members to share their skills and resources, with one catch: everything is free. People are asked to donate items and services that they think may be of use to other people in the community and to freely share them. The last local RRFM event, held in June of this year, saw people of all ages and backgrounds coming through and finding a plethora of useful items and services. Some suggested items are clothing, locally grown foods, kitchenware, books, art supplies, toys, music, movies, or services like hair cutting or massage therapy, but folks are encouraged to bring anything that they are compelled to share. People looking to find some holiday gifts are encouraged to come and support a local gift economy and can save some cash by visiting the RRFM.

People who would like to donate items can bring them to the ROTA Gallery starting on Wednesday, December 14th. The ROTA will be open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Items that are leftover can be picked up at the end of the day by the people that brought them, and anything left at the close of the event will be distributed to local thrift stores and charitable organizations, as well as stored for future Really Really Free Market events. People can discuss items they have available as well as items they are looking to find by searching for the Plattsburgh Really Really Free Market group on Facebook.

The Plattsburgh General Assembly is a community group that formed in the midst of the Occupy protests, adopting the moderated discussion and direct democracy format used in the General Assembly meetings at the Occupy Wall Street camp. Meetings are held at the ROTA Gallery, located at 19 Clinton Street, every Sunday at 4:00 pm. Community members of all backgrounds are welcome to come and participate in discussion about their hopes and concerns for the community, and how to come together to address them. The ROTA Gallery is a downtown cultural center available for art exhibitions, performances and community events for the enrichment of the city of Plattsburgh and the global arts community. They opened late last year and have regularly been an outlet for a variety of artists and performers from the region and beyond. Anyone interested in getting involved with the space is encouraged to come to a weekly open meeting, which are held every Wednesday night at 8 pm.
