PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2010) – The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of
Theatre will present a Pendragon Theatre production of "Eurydice" on
Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine
Arts Building.
"Eurydice," written by contemporary playwright Sarah Ruhl, revisits
the Orpheus myth through the eyes of its heroine. The show is the
playwright's posthumous love letter to her own father. Pendragon Theatre
of Saranac Lake chose this play as part of its 2010 repertory season
and in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
Dr. Karen Kirkham of Dickinson College will direct the Pendragon
cast through this bittersweet journey. Actors include SUNY Plattsburgh
Department of Theatre alumnus Tyler Nye and faculty member Laura Jean
Schwartau-Swanson, as well as Leslie Dame, Donna Moschek, Brandon
Patterson, Clare Paulson and Bob Pettee.
Kirkham has created a movement landscape inspired by Butoh dance.
Her colleague, Dr. Robert Pound, has composed music specifically for
Pendragon's production. The set, by New York designer Tijana Bjelajac,
was created to reflect the story's theatrical nature and incorporates an
elevator in which it rains, a room of string in a surreal underworld,
and a symbolic Lethe, the river of forgetfulness.
A theater review by Charles Isherwood of The New York Times
described Ruhl's "Eurydice" as "rhapsodically beautiful – an
inexpressibly moving theatrical fable about love, loss and the pleasures
and pains of memory … 'Eurydice' movingly suggests that commemorating
life, its pleasures and problems, its transience and pain, is the only
way to triumph over death and loss."
Tickets will be sold at the door. Prices are $10 for general
admission; $8 for seniors, students, SUNY Plattsburgh faculty and staff;
and $2 for SUNY Plattsburgh students. For more information, please call
the SUNY Plattsburgh Performing Arts Information Line at 518-564-2283.
