From the Pipeline...

By Scott Osika

On a long road trip out to visit family in Buffalo, I was able to sit down with Mark DelMedico, a featured musician on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio. Mark DelMedico is a solo acoustic musician from Sauquoit, New York, a town located on the outskirts of Utica, New York. Mark’s music can be classified into several genres which include acoustic, folk, classic, and rock.
Mark recalls becoming a fan of music as far back as the days he sat on his front porch in the summer time listening to an old transistor radio. Around the age of eleven, Mark began playing guitar after he became interested hearing the Beatles tune, “Here Comes the Sun”. Mark says “I can remember thinking that was the most beautiful acoustic guitar song that I had ever heard and to this day is still one of my favorites.” Other musicians that have influenced Mark throughout his life are Cat Stevens, Strawbs, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young.
When out on a gig, Mark jams out on a Gibson J45 Koa acoustic guitar and says “So far, it is definitely my favorite guitar that I have owned.” He previously owned a D28 Martin and a J200 Gibson that he really enjoyed playing but those were all sold years ago.
Mark has been creating music for many years, he left the music scene in 1985 and came back into it in 2003. Mark married and had 5 beautiful children and decided a steady income was best at the time for his family. By 2003, his children, most in their 20’s, were all grown up and Mark was able to pursue his music career once again.
Since back to the music scene, quite a few songs have been written and several recorded. This past spring, 10 songs were recorded and the “Life Ain’t Easy” album was completed. Mark’s friend John Liebing did a fantastic job with the instrumentation while Mark sings and plays guitar. Throughout the album, “Life Ain’t Easy”, listeners can expect a clever mix of styles and techniques. The album has a bit of something for everyone. “Life Ain’t Easy” is an album that Mark wanted to move along quickly with a various genre feel to it. He feels that an album which seems to go on forever will probably turn off more listeners than attract them. Marks says, “I try to write songs that people can relate to, like yeah, I’ve done that or I’ve felt that.” “Also, my wife and I split up and some of the songs are about that, most of what I write is stuff that I have lived through.”
During our interview I was able to ask Mark what his plans were for the remainder of the year and also if he had any plans brewing for 09’. He said that after a long year, great recording and album release, he wants to get his health up to par and does have a minor surgery scheduled soon. When he’s all healed up, Mark plans to return performing around the Utica area. Mark is also planning to record another album in 2009 that will be completely acoustic, so keep an eye out for that!
“Life Ain’t Easy” will be a pleasant experience to new listeners.
