Montreal's International Pyromusical Competition
by Scott Osika
Do you enjoy watching really good fireworks but don't know when or where to go and see them? You most likely watched a fireworks display on the 4th of July and usually don't get a chance to see anymore. Besides the Mayor's Cup fireworks on July 11th, 2008, plan to go see at least one of the many firework displays just across the border. It takes about one hour to arrive at the scene of the Montreal Pyromusical Competition and you will not be disappointed!
Each year La Ronde in Montreal, Quebec has a International Pyromusical Competition. As the fireworks light up the sky, music is played in La Ronde park and you can also tune in through your own portable radio on channel . Police block off the Jaques-Cartier bridge about one hour before the competition begins, allowing spectators to walk out onto the bridge. Bring your own light weight camping chairs, find a spot where you're most comfortable, and enjoy one of the most beautiful firework displays you're ever going to see.
This year the competition is fierce as France, Italy and S. Korea have already shown by putting on extraordinary performances. Future dates of competitions are as follows; Portugal Saturday 12th July; Australia Saturday 19th July; Canada Wednesday 23rd July; Austria Saturday 26th July; United States Wednesday 30th July; China Saturday 2nd August; and La Ronde Wednesday 6th August.
International travel, even to a city as close as Montreal is and should always be an enjoyable change of pace from the rural humdrum. The International displays of music and art will always be a wonderment of community on a large scale. When you do cross the boarder you will need to have a passport or a birth certificate and second form of valid identification. Arrive early allowing yourself ample time to find parking. Many lots are available and charge anywhere from $5 to 15 Canadian. Parking near Longoueil subway is close to the bridge entrance. Here are directions to a parking lot that is not to far from the stairs onto the bridge. Enjoy the competitions.
