Today, Lake Champlain is used mostly by personal water craft along with the Lake Champlain ferries for transportation to and from New York's neighboring state Vermont.

Battle of Plattsburgh

The MacDonough Monument towers 135 feet above the landscape overlooking the Saranac River and Lake Champlain. The monument commemorates Captain Thomas MacDonough for his naval victory against a British fleet in the Battle of Plattsburgh, September 11, 1814, ending the war or 1812. MacDonough's feat in the Plattsburgh Bay, lead to General Macomb's land victory over the advancing British troops. Without naval support the British retreated back to Lower Canada.
